A replica of a Konominofue, (Acorn flute) The Kokorobue was first created in 2010 in collaboration with ceramic artist San Ooizumi. Since it has no set musical scale, this flute was designed more to express ones feelings. Since it has no set musical scale, this flute was designed more to express ones feelings. Playing with a kokorobue can sometime feel more like engaging in a musical prayer rather than playing a song. Anyone will be able to play this flute with ease. Each flute has its own unique sound and harmony.

Konominofue (acorn flute)-

This flute is approximately 3cm in height and has 3 holes, one for air flow and two for pitch changes.

There are a variety of sounds that can be produced. Sounds from the konominofue can be similar to birdsong and can create a sense of interconnection with the earth and universe, transcending space and time.

This is one of Baisen’s favorite flutes to perform with, especially in temples or shrines while performing “prayer music”, a special type of performance where the musician plays more for the gods of the shrine/temple, rather than for the audience.

When Baisen plays the konominofue in the wilderness, the nature around her seems to actively participate with the music she is creating.

During her concerts, Baisen prefers to begin by performing with this flute as a greeting to the audience.

Concert Flute-

There are four different kinds of flutes: concert flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo. Baisen performs with the concert flute and the alto flute. These flutes have a range of three octaves. They can be made from various materials such as gold, silver and platinum. Baisen prefers to use flutes made from gold and silver. She teaches the concert flute and shinobue in the classes she offers.

Listen to the sounds of the concert flute in "Arigatou" and "Manyou" from the Manyouka CD.

Shinobue-

This is a Japanese style flute made from bamboo, and will have either six or seven holes. Baisen usually plays the seven holed shinobue. This flute is well suited for expressing the atmosphere and imagery of Japan, mainly due to it's soft tones. The tones from one note to the next also tend to blur, one of the many charms of the shinobue. The standard sizes of shinobue can range from #1 pon-choshi to #11 pon-choshi.

Listen to the sounds of the shinobue in "Kaguya" and "Hagoromo", from the Manyouka CD.

Noukan-

This is a traditional bamboo flute made out of soot bamboo. It is used mainly in Noh and Kabuki performances.

Baisen uses this flute to express feelings and create an atmosphere for the audience. She believes the strong and powerful sounds created with the Noukan are able to quickly vibrate out into the universe.

Listen to the sounds of the Noukan in "Kagome Kagome" off of the Manyouka CD.

Bamboo Recorder-

Made from bamboo, this is a five holed flute designed after the Native American flute. The combination of the North American Native design, and Japanese bamboo makes it the charming feature of this flute. When playing the bamboo recorder, Baisen feels a sense of vastness, as the wind blows across the land and rushes against the cliffs.

Listen to the sounds of the Bamboo recorder in "Kokoperi" from the Manyouka CD.

Native American Flute-

This particular flute comes from the Apache tribes that roamed what is now the south western United States. The body is made from American cedar. The sound from this flute creates an essence of watching fairies fluttering around you, the feel of a calm wind, or watching soft clouds lazily pass across a bright blue sky.
